Good morning, Laramie. Here's your local news at a glance for Tuesday, the 20th of January.

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Federal regulators rejected Union Pacific and Norfolk Southern's merger application last week (it lacked key market share data), leaving Wyoming coal shippers with current rail options while the companies have until Feb. 17 to refile their petition.  Cowboy State Daily
  • Gas prices in Wyoming rose a bit this week as the average hit $2.42 per gallon, 47 cents lower than this time last year according to GasBuddy reports. Prices vary widely between stations, with some as low as $1.96 and others reaching $2.99 per gallon.  Laramie Live

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • A strong solar surge will hit Earth's atmosphere tonight, possibly lighting up Wyoming’s sky with auroras. Experts say the storm may bring displays between 9 p.m. and 3 a.m. — although 60% cloud cover in northern and central areas could limit visibility.  Cowboy State Daily

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • State lawmakers passed a 58-page draft bill to dismantle the Wyoming Business Council — shifting programs like the Broadband Office's $400 million federal fund oversight to the governor's office and other agencies — as the full Legislature will debate the proposal in February.  Laramie Live

SPORTS NEWS

  • Teen biathlete Darin Binning Jr. of Laramie—coached by his Olympic father—prepares for national races and dreams of the 2030 Games in the French Alps. He won local ski competitions and trains at area venues while his family works to secure more race chances amid weather challenges.  Cowboy State Daily
