- ➤ In a study of UW traditions, historian John Waggener revealed that Pistol Pete, UW's cowboy mascot, began in 1969 when San Jose State student Don Bogdan donned cowboy gear and a flag (Bang!) after a spirited football game; the beloved figure now inspires fans at local sporting events.
