Good morning, Laramie. Here's your local news at a glance for Monday, the 2nd of June.

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Blossom Ko Lumley launched Startup Wyoming after meeting hundreds of startup founders across the state — her report found problems like workforce housing shortages and youth brain drain that have hurt high-growth businesses. The program will offer networking and mentorship events including a summit in 2026 to help build a stronger startup ecosystem.  Cowboy State Daily

EDUCATION NEWS

  • At an Education Committee meeting in Laramie, local lawmakers and a grieving mother testified over challenges in public education after a fifth grader at Carpenter Elementary took his own life, raising serious concerns about inadequate support. The testimony focused on the need for state-led reforms—such as improved dyslexia training and evidence-based reading instruction—to better protect vulnerable students.  Cowboy State Daily
  • Ranch children from Riverton are enrolled at Cowboy State Virtual Academy in Sheridan to get a flexible online education that lets them focus on rodeo events and ranch chores; 10-year-old Kenzley Sims will compete in barrel racing while her 9-year-old brother helps on the ranch. The fully accredited public school program meets traditional standards — letting students work at their own pace — and gives families the freedom to travel for competitions and events.  Cowboy State Daily

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Wyoming wildlife experts say moose can suffer severe harm when tens of thousands of ticks drain their blood and pull off their hair. The heavy infestations have been seen near Grand Teton National Park and may lower moose survival as winter approaches (experts note that these cases can be very serious).  Cowboy State Daily
  • Hummingbird season returned to Wyoming after mid-May as four species (rufous, black-chinned, calliope, and broad-tailed) fed on wildflower nectar and helped pollinate native plants such as the Indian paintbrush. Experts including Dr. Carlos Martinez del Rio noted that these tiny birds also control insects and that places like Sinks Canyon State Park (a popular birdwatching spot) offer locals opportunities to observe their acrobatic flights.  Cowboy State Daily
