CRIME NEWS

  • A Laramie County jury found 69-year-old Douglas Mark Smith guilty of two counts of first-degree murder for the July 20 killings at The Coin Shop in Cheyenne — he remains in custody with the Laramie County Sheriff's Office pending sentencing.  Laramie Live

CULTURE NEWS

  • The Wyoming International Chamber Music Festival will debut in Laramie, where the sound of violins, cellos, and pianos will fill the air—offering a new cultural experience to residents.  Laramie Boomerang
  • Photographer Penny Wolin will host town-hall meetings this summer at the University of Wyoming and other venues in Wyoming to discuss her new Jewish book and engage locals in dialogue about Jewish culture — the events will span several locations statewide.  Laramie Boomerang

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Low-income high school students from across Wyoming attended a four-day camp at the University of Wyoming run by Camp GEAR UP that aimed to improve their readiness for college + help boost their postsecondary enrollment.  Laramie Boomerang

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • City of Laramie Mosquito Control detected West Nile virus in three mosquito samples collected from traps just outside town this week, and CDC guidelines rate the risk as low with no human cases reported. Officials will continue targeted fogging and larval control in parks, golf courses, and greenbelt trails, and residents are advised to repair screens and use repellent (for example, DEET) after dusk.  County 5

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Laramie County Sheriff’s Office opened new special management pods at the jail to better care for inmates with mental health issues. Mental health, medical, and security staff will work together — the inmates will be moved into these pods in the next several days — while treatment plans are developed for future care.  Laramie Live
  • Starting July 21 at 8 AM, the City will close a rolling sidewalk on Grand Avenue’s north side from 2nd to 1st for window maintenance until August 15 at 5 PM and block thru traffic for sewer manhole work from 8 AM to 8 PM. It will also close 22nd street from Grand to Willett for UW Aquatic Center service line work from July 22 at 8 AM to August 2 at 5 PM, with —detours are in place—.  County 5

  • Local residents have formed a coalition to tackle Laramie’s housing crisis as rising costs and limited options hurt families and businesses — the group will take steps to address the issue.  Laramie Boomerang
