Here's your local news at a glance for Sunday, the 27th of July.
Good morning, Laramie.
🎭 Culture
In the late 1800s, ranchers in Wyoming’s remote Bighorn Basin received a mail delivery with shocking news that Cuba had sunk into the ocean from a volcanic eruption, and they spent a harsh winter discussing the false tale until it was revealed as a hoax.
Local ranchers also swapped stories of innovative rattlesnake traps and the crimes of outlaw McDermott—tales that helped ease the loneliness of their isolated lives.
🎓 Education
The University of Wyoming is finalizing a $289.5 million project that includes a Gothic-style North Hall dorm with 410 beds and a two-story dining hall designed to serve 1,500 meals each day.
North Hall will open next month for fall students and the five-story South Hall is set to open in the winter semester—its design honors the historic sandstone style of the campus.
