Here's your local news at a glance for Wednesday, the 14th of October.
Good morning, Laramie.
🌲 Environment
Creosote-soaked railroad ties have been stacked near a West Side block, causing strong odors and concerns about health and fire safety.
Local residents and a nonprofit are urging Union Pacific and Omaha Track to move the ties while DEQ (the state agency) reviews regulatory permits.
🏛️ Government
A proposed Russian oil deal divided Wyoming leaders as Sen. Cynthia Lummis and Gov. Mark Gordon opposed it while Sen. John Barrasso and Rep. Harriet Hageman supported the move.
Announced last Friday, the plan calls for 500,000 barrels now and 1 million over six months (aimed at lowering fuel costs).
ConnectGen Laramie County LLC has paused its permit application for a 41,200-acre wind project near Cheyenne, delaying its public review as conditions from the Industrial Siting Council remain unmet (resubmission is planned next year).
The 650-megawatt project could power about 200,000 homes.
State officials urge qualifying households to apply now for low-income energy assistance, which offers help with winter heating bills + possible furnace replacement; $11 million is available and benefits adjust as utility rates rise.
Income limits include roughly $2,988 for singles, $3,908 for couples and $5,747 for families.
