COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Residents in Laramie can sign up for Laramie Interfaith’s Christmas Tree Pickup Fundraiser, where Tough Guys Landscaping and Lighting will pick up trees for $20 to be mulched. Trees must be set out by 7 a.m. Monday, Jan. 5, and proceeds will support the food pantry.  County 5

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • The Naughton power plant near Kemmerer will convert its last two coal-burning units to natural gas this month (crews are set to retool them) as part of a move to support cleaner energy production.  Laramie Boomerang
  • Xcel Energy plans to cut power today from about noon to 6 p.m. in Colorado's Front Range amid high winds and dry conditions that heighten wildfire risks; however, Wyoming utilities (including Black Hills Energy) say Laramie residents remain unaffected as they monitor shifting weather.  Cowboy State Daily

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Public visitors seeking services at MBRTB (Medicine Bow-Routt National Forests and Thunder Basin National Grassland) offices are urged to call ahead for current hours and pass sale info. Maps, permits, and annual day-use passes are available online while appointments with Forest Service staff can be scheduled by phone.  County 5

SPORTS NEWS

  • At the University of Wyoming football game on Nov. 22, Josh Allen tapped fan Jaxon Sweep to build a giant beer snake. Sweep rallied fans to collect empty cups and the viral moment drew national attention, including a feature on the Kelce podcast (even though he doesn’t drink beer).  Cowboy State Daily
  • At last week’s National Finals Rodeo in Las Vegas, a new quarter-point scoring system gave judges more precise scores and led to closer finishes among Team Wyoming riders; officials said they will use this change in the upcoming 2026 season.  Cowboy State Daily
